The Culture Sub Commission of the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO works with a number of government departments and a wide range of stakeholder organisations and regional networks to develop its programme of activities.
World Heritage Committee
New Zealand was elected to UNESCO’s prestigious World Heritage Committee at the General Conference in Paris in October 2003. Highly respected Maori leader Tumu Te Heuheu, Paramount Chief of Ngati TuWharetoa, whose ancestors gifted Tongariro to New Zealand, heads the New Zealand delegation. The delegation, led by the Department of Conservation, will represent the interests and concerns of New Zealand and the Pacific in the work of the Committee.
The Committee is responsible for implementing the World Heritage Convention. It assesses applications for sites to be added to the World Heritage List, and monitors listed sites to ensure they are properly managed. It also allocates finance from the World Heritage Fund for repair or restoration.
