UNESCO’s work is divided into five key sectors:

• Education
• Natural Sciences
• Social and Human Sciences
• Culture
• Communications and Information

The organisation pursues strategic programme objectives at global, regional and country levels.  The need to work intersectorally or across sectors is an organisational priority that was agreed to by Member States at the 34th UNESCO General Conference in October 2007.
